    How JYLY works

JYLY is the Finnish putting game by Markus Lindqvist. The original is a free web app at jyly.altervista.org; this page follows the same rules.

    • Mark every metre from 5 m to 10 m in front of the basket.
    • Start at 10 m and throw 5 putts.
    • Each make scores its distance in metres, so 3 makes from 8 m score 24 points.
    • Your next round is from 5 m plus one metre per make: 0 makes puts you at 5 m, all 5 at 10 m.
    • A game is 20 rounds (100 putts). A perfect game scores 1,000.

The board above does the arithmetic. After each round it moves the distance, adds the points and shows the score you could still reach if every remaining putt went in.

    One player or four

Chains is built for one player at a time. A paper scorecard is naturally a group activity, so this page takes 1 to 4 players: each has an independent game, and the board shows whose turn it is. Multiplayer is a web-only extra; Chains plays one player at a time. With one player it stays out of the way.

    Long mode

The original also has a long game from 11 to 15 m with a maximum of 1,500. It is here as a web-only option, clearly labelled, because Chains plays the standard game. Switch it on before the first round; it is locked once a game has started.

    Keeping the score

The game in progress, the history and your settings are saved in this browser under one key. Reload the page mid-game and it returns to the same round. Completed games count towards your best and the average of your last 10, with standard and Long games counted separately; a game ended early is labelled incomplete and left out of both. The site also counts anonymous actions, such as a finished game and its score band, but the game itself never leaves this browser. Clearing site data deletes it.

    Playing at the basket

Use the number keys 0–5 to record a round and U to undo, if the phone is on a tripod or you are scoring for a group. The screen wake lock keeps the display on while a game is running where the browser allows it. The click and vibration are off by default; both are in the row under the buttons, and vibration only works where the browser supports it.

    How do you score JYLY?

Each make scores its distance in metres, so 3 makes from 8 m score 24 points. The next round is from 5 m plus one metre per make: 0 makes puts you at 5 m, all 5 at 10 m. A game is 20 rounds, 100 putts.

What is a good JYLY score?

The maximum is 1,000. Making 60% of your putts across the distances averages about 480 points, and 70% about 595. One published best is 726; there is no official statistics source, so treat any figure as one player's game.

Can I play with fewer than five putters?

Yes. Putt back and forth with one disc: the count is what matters, not five separate discs. The original game's own instructions say the same.

    What is Long mode?

The original web app also offers a long game from 11 to 15 m, with a maximum of 1,500. It is here as a web-only option, labelled Long mode. Chains plays the standard 5–10 m game.

How do I play with friends?

Choose 2, 3 or 4 players above. Each player has an independent 20-round game and the board takes turns. Multiplayer is a web-only extra; Chains plays one player at a time. The four-player printable scorecard does the same on paper.

Does the app sync this game?

No. The web game saves in this browser only. Chains keeps its own JYLY history on your iPhone and Apple Watch, with iCloud sync between them.
